French

To provide all children in Key Stage 2 with an engaging and exciting French curriculum which enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to respond in the target language. The curriculum develops children’s learning and fosters children’s curiosity and understanding of the world. It provides a foundation for learning further languages thus preparing them for future opportunities in French speaking countries.

Intent

The teaching of French in KS2 provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language learning in the future. The children will be confident learners excited at the prospect of learning a new language. Ultimately, pupils will have a love of languages, achieved by nurturing a curiosity of languages and the motivation to explore and respect other cultures and people.

Implementation

All KS2 children receive a weekly French lesson with a peripatetic teacher and class teachers consolidate this learning by offering opportunities, where possible, for children to practise their French throughout the rest of the week. Class teachers work alongside the peripatetic teacher to ensure consistent high quality French teaching across KS2. French lessons are fun and meaningful, providing students with many opportunities for both collaboration and independent work. The curriculum is designed to ensure that all four skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening) are covered in every unit and opportunities to revisit key skills, in different ways, are built in to the children’s learning journeys. French teaching is interactive, creative and challenging.

Impact

Our MFL curriculum ensures that children develop their knowledge of the French language and are given the tools to continue this learning at KS3 as well as in real life settings. Children will be enthusiastic language learners who are ready to take on the challenges of learning any modern foreign language. Our school provides both French and Spanish after school clubs, with more children in attendance year on year. Pupils are able to speak with confidence about what they are learning, voice their achievements and discuss their own progress. MFL has a high profile in our school, with a permanent ‘Welcome’ display at the entrance to the school, highlighting the many languages spoken by our children.
