Year 1
Year 1 is an important stage in a child's primary education, building upon the learning and experiences gained in the Early Years Foundation Stage. As children move into Key Stage 1, they develop increasing independence, confidence and responsibility while continuing to enjoy a broad, engaging and stimulating curriculum.
At St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary School, we provide a supportive environment where children are encouraged to become curious, resilient and enthusiastic learners. Through a balance of practical experiences, discussion, investigation and structured teaching, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for future success.
Curriculum
Children in Year 1 follow the National Curriculum and take part in learning across a wide range of subjects, including:
- Religious Education
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- History
- Geography
- Art and Design
- Design and Technology
- Computing
- Music
- Physical Education
- Personal, Social and Health Education
Learning is planned to be engaging, meaningful and challenging, enabling children to make connections across different areas of the curriculum and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Reading, Writing and Mathematics
Developing secure foundations in reading, writing and mathematics is a key priority in Year 1. Children continue to build their phonics knowledge, develop fluency in reading and grow in confidence as writers. In mathematics, pupils strengthen their understanding of number and calculation while developing their reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Regular opportunities to practise and apply these skills help children become confident and independent learners.
Personal Development
Year 1 is a time when children further develop their social skills, confidence and independence. They are encouraged to work collaboratively, show respect for others and take pride in their achievements. Through positive relationships and clear expectations, children learn the importance of perseverance, responsibility and kindness.
Catholic Life
As a Catholic school, our faith is central to daily life. Children are supported in developing their understanding of Gospel values and are encouraged to live out these values through their actions and relationships. Prayer, worship and reflection form an important part of the school day and help children to grow spiritually as well as academically.
Home and School Partnership
We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential to children's success. Parents and carers are encouraged to support learning at home, particularly through regular reading and practising key skills. By working together, we can ensure that every child is supported to achieve their full potential and enjoy a successful Year 1 experience.
